Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) - Implementation Resources

Scientific Rating: 2
"Supported by Research Evidence"

Pre-implementation Assessments to be given to organizations or providers in order to measure organizational or individual readiness:

  • The Family Therapy Training Institute of Miami provides instruments for Program Directors to use in the process of choosing who will be trained that are geared to help pick the optimal candidates for training and model implementation. There is also a proprietary PowerPoint assessment instrument delineating the organizational aspects that require attention to ensure successful implementation and sustainability. This organization readiness assessment follows the implementation guidelines, Implementation Research: A Synthesis of the Literature, which is available on the Institute's website at www.bsft-av.com/implementation-standards.html. These materials are supplied by the institute to agencies as part of the pre-training organizational consultations.

Implementation Tools for the program (e.g., implementation guides or manuals):

  • The BSFT Manual is available at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) site at: archives.drugabuse.gov/txmanuals/bsft/bsftindex.html
  • Additionally, at the time of training, trainees and agencies receive handouts; a more detailed, as-yet-unpublished, manual; and copies of PowerPoint training presentations as well as clinical forms. Implementation Research: A Synthesis of the Literature, www.bsft-av.com/implementation-standards.html is referenced in the handouts and discusses core elements for implementing an evidence-based program. BSFT-specific implementation guidelines are presented in the course of training and consultation.

Fidelity measures:

  • Clinician fidelity to the model is measured using the rating scales used by BSFT adherence measures to score clinical performance along key BSFT dimensions. The adherence measures are called the Videotape Rating Checklists and the Overall Supervision Rating Checklist. A description of this process including who to contact for more information can be found at www.bsft-av.com/training/adherence-monitoring.html.
