About This Program

Target Population: Teachers, nurses, and social service providers who work with children and families

Brief Description

This program provides guidance to teachers, nurses, and social service providers in how to work effectively with parents who have cognitive limitations to benefit the needs of their children. The program is available on DVD and online.

Program Goals:

The goals of Working with Parents Who Have Cognitive Limitations are:

  • Recognizing when parents might have cognitive limitations
  • Communicating effectively with parents with cognitive limitations
  • Developing a respectful working relationship with parents with cognitive limitations
  • Maximizing appropriate and beneficial conditions for parents with cognitive limitation and their children

Essential Components

The essential components of Working with Parents Who Have Cognitive Limitations include:

  • Provides tools through a DVD or online training for professionals to recognize parents who might have cognitive challenges and help them work with parents to:
    • Prepare and support their children in school
    • Provide access to health care
    • Address situations that may arise in the household
  • The DVD version includes three programs for three targets audiences: nurses, teachers and social service providers and can be used in a group format or individually. Each program has supporting videos on how to detect the challenges and improve the outcome for parents with cognitive challenges and children. Each program on the DVD consists of the following components with variations to each target audience.
