Opioids, Marijuana, and Child Protection: Legal Considerations of Recent Developments
This webinar explores the legal issues presented by both the increased use of opioid pain relievers, heroin, and other illicit opioids and the legalization of marijuana. The presenter reviews the basic legal framework for the child protection system including examining statutes legalizing marijuana and summarizing appellate case law addressing when use of these legal substances may constitute child maltreatment, including exposure in utero. He also offers concrete suggestions for addressing the problems presented by the use of these substances that may impair parental functioning.
