Definition for Parent Training:

Parent training is defined by the CEBC as a service to help parents improve their parenting of and communication with their children with a goal of reducing the risk of child abuse and neglect and/or reducing disruptive behaviors. Parent training may be delivered in several formats, including one-on-one, group, classroom-based, and internet-based, but requires some sort of direct intervention with parents. This service is frequently cited as a prerequisite to the return of children to their parents' care and the dismissal of court dependency. In most child welfare cases, parents are required to participate in education with some interactive components, using a wide variety of curricula. Parent training programs may also be called parent education programs; however, training programs usually focus on skill building (“knowing how”) where education programs focus on more complex processes and problem solving (“knowing why”). There are often more than one type of parent training or education service available in each county, and these types of services differ widely from county to county.

Why was Parent Training chosen as a topic by the Advisory Committee? (Click for Answer)

Parent Training was chosen by the Advisory Committee because it is so widely used and because there are specific programs that have been studied, for which there is evidence of efficacy, and which are applicable to the child welfare population. It is critical for us to know what works for families. If counties and courts are aware of what programs work in improving parent functioning they will be able to prescribe effective programs and avoid using programs that have no demonstrated positive impact on parental functioning.
