KiVa Antibullying Program

KiVa Antibullying Program is a bullying prevention program for schools offering basic education. It provides feasible and ready-made tools for teachers to both prevent bullying from happening and intervene in it. The program has three core components: prevention, intervention, and monitoring. Prevention is targeted at the whole school community. Teachers implement the program by delivering a set of student lessons to target grades (1, 4, and 7). Intervention is carried out by a designated KiVa team that is trained to follow the guided procedure to tackle bullying cases. The prevalence of bullying and victimization is monitored via a yearly student and staff survey which is filled in online. The program offers online learning platforms and video resources in addition to printed materials such as parent’s guide or teacher manuals.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a therapy model that asserts the importance of building on the resources and motivation of clients because they know their problems best and are capable of generating solutions to solve their own problems. Central to SFBT is client strengths and resiliencies, client's prior ability to develop solutions, and exceptions to problems. Discussion of exceptions and movement towards future adaptive behaviors allows the clinician and client to focus on solutions to the client's problem, rather than dwelling on the problem itself. The emphasis of SFBT is on the process of developing an image of a realistic solution rather than dwelling on the past manifestation of the problem, with the focus being on identifying past successes and exceptions to the problem in an effort to accomplish set goals.

Trauma Resiliency Model

TRM is a mind-body approach to treating trauma consisting of nine skills that focus on sensory awareness for regulating emotions. The program is designed to develop a more realistic self-appraisal and an increased sense of well-being. Symptoms are viewed as common biological responses to stress and trauma rather than pathological or mental weakness. Clients learn that when the body’s natural survival responses are thwarted, multisensory cues can remind them of the traumatic event as if it is happening in the present moment. Clients are introduced to the first six wellness skills of TRM (i.e., the Community Resiliency Model (CRM)®) for self-care and to help manage distress connected to reminders of their traumatic experience. The remaining three trauma reprocessing skills – Titration, Pendulation, and Completing Survival Responses – can then be used to gently reprocess the traumatic experience. TRM can be implemented as a stand-alone intervention but can also be integrated into other treatment modalities.

TRM can also be used with adults, but the CEBC has not reviewed the program in this capacity.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy

MBCT is based on Jon Kabat Zinn's Stress Reduction program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, which was developed to help people suffering with chronic physical pain and disease. It includes simple meditation techniques to help participants become more aware of their experience in the present moment, by tuning in to moment-to-moment changes in the mind and the body. Participants learn the practice of mindfulness meditation through a course of eight weekly classes (the atmosphere is that of a class, rather than a therapy group) and through daily practice of meditation skills while listening to tapes at home. MBCT also includes basic education about depression and suicidality, and a number of exercises derived from cognitive therapy. These exercises demonstrate the links between thinking and feeling and demonstrate ways that participants can care for themselves when they notice their mood changing or a crisis threatens to overwhelm them.
